Earl Grey gets a French twist which is oh-so-fruity. A medium-bodied black tea base with pretty petals and notes of fruit that play with classic bergamot in an inspiring, bold and refined infusion. In the United Kingdom, Lady Grey tea is a branded version of Earl Grey tea. It's a black tea flavoured with bergamot essential oil, similar to Earl Grey.
In the world of tea, Earl Grey tea is the most well-known and widely consumed flavouring. The tea's name comes from Charles, the 2nd Earl Grey and British Prime Minister from 1830 to 1834, which is a little-known fact. When this renowned mix was first created, the only ingredients were black tea and oil of bergamot, a citrous oil extracted from small lemons cultivated in the Mediterranean.
The origins of the mix have been the subject of many legends. While in China on a diplomatic trip for the Prime Minister, a British diplomat is said to have helped save the life of a mandarin – or maybe the mandarin's son – by providing the recipe. Some people believe Earl Grey was the one who intervened to rescue the mandarin when he was on his way to China. Neither of these claims has ever been proven.
The benefits of drinking Earl Grey tea for digestion are well-documented. Tea, which is a natural antispasmodic, may help ease the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome or poor digestion if you have it.
